The Mustang was designed in 1940 by North American Aviation. The P-51B Mustang “Shangri-La” was the legendary aircraft of American ace Don Gentile, an iconic World War II fighter that symbolized a safe haven, named after the novel Lost Horizon.

It became famous for Gentile’s large number of kills, becoming a symbol of air power and vital for escorting long-range bombers over Europe. He claimed 7.5 of his 21 victories in this aircraft. Don Gentile crashed this A/C whilst displaying to reporters after his final mission at his home base Debden on 13-Apr-44.
