P-51 D Mustang

Model: P-51 D Mustang Cripes A’Mighty 3rd
Pilot: Major George Earl Preddy Jr.
Bodney, Norfolk, England, 1944

The Mustang was designed in 1940 by North American Aviation and its P-51D version was the most numerous variant.
The P-51D arrived in Europe in the spring of 1944 and became the USAAF’s primary long-range escort fighter. The versatile Mustang also served as a fighter-bomber and reconnaissance aircraft. Few aircraft could match the P-51D; by the end of the war, Mustangs had destroyed more enemy aircraft than any other USAAF fighter in Europe.
